Edgar County Clerk & Recorder of Deeds

Welcome, this is the Edgar County Clerk & Recorder of Deeds online. The Clerk’s office is here to serve you. We provide a variety of services to the public and other governmental units, many of which are described on these pages.

Established in 1823, Edgar County comprises 628 square miles in East Central Illinois. The 2000 U.S. Census reported our population at 19,704; and, of that number, there are nearly 13,000 registered voters. The County is comprised of 15 Townships and 29 Precincts with 10 polling locations.

LAND RECORDS

 

The County Clerk is also the ex-officio Recorder of Deeds for Edgar County.  In an average year, we record nearly 5,000 Deeds, Mortgages and other valuable records.

 

Edgar County records begin in 1827; and, except for Military Records, are open to the public.  Indexes up through 1993 are handwritten.  Beginning in 1994 thru present, indexes may be searched and documents viewed and printed from the public search computer. There is a per page charge for copies of recorded documents.

 

Other recorded documents include Surveys, Plats of Subdivisions, Monument Records, Release of Mortgages, Assignments, Ordinances, State and Federal Liens, Judgments, and many miscellaneous documents.

 

Recorded Military records are not subject to public inspection. These documents shall be accessible only to the person named in the document, the named person’s dependents, the county veterans’ service officer, representatives of the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, or any person with written authorization from the named person or the named person’s dependents.  A special application form is required to be properly executed prior to issuance of any military record.

 

All instruments presented for recording must meet the requirements set forth in Illinois Statutes and County Resolutions/Ordinances.  Certain Deeds must be accompanied by the Illinois Transfer Declaration Form, which may be filled out online in a guided and interactive fashion on the web site of the Illinois Department of Revenue.  Recording fees and other requirements may be obtained by calling the office at (217) 466-7433.

 

Business Hours:  Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Excluding Good Friday and all State of Illinois Holidays

 

Special Considerations:

Any properly executed instruments presented for recordation after 3:00 p.m. will be recorded the next business day.

 

The Recorder’s Office provides NO LEGAL ADVICE or assistance in filling out forms pertaining to the legal ownership or conveyance of real estate.  Please consult a licensed attorney.

 

The Recorder’s Office provides NO ABSTRACTING SERVICES.  Please contact a title search company.
